Hargeisa -(Berberanews)-The Minister of Information, Public Awareness and Culture of the Republic of Somaliland Mr. Saleebaan Yusuf Ali Koore, who is also the Spokesperson of the Government, has officially announced the opening of political parties from among the three national parties that will run in the upcoming elections.
Speaking at a press conference in Hargeisa this afternoon, Minister Koore, speaking on behalf of Somaliland President Muse Bihi Abdi, said that political parties are officially open and registration will begin.
“The president of the Republic of Somaliland, while respecting the law of the land, respecting the will of the people, and implementing the constitution, recognizes as we have already done in the law of local governments and associations that political parties are open,” said Minister Koore.
Members of the Somaliland House of Representatives have been debating in the media in recent days about the implementation of the Law on the Opening of Political Parties, which President Bihi has returned to the House of Representatives for amendment.
Although many people are talking about the possibility of opening political parties ahead of the presidential election, the decision announced by the government is said to be at the heart of the opposition parties’ concerns over the pre-opening elections.
