Will the new US envoy  assist Ethiopia’s peace process?

The US has appointed a new envoy to the Horn of Africa to assist with the peace process in Ethiopia.

Mike Hammer previously served as the United States’ ambassador to the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Mr Hammer’s appointment, according to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, demonstrates America’s commitment to Ethiopia’s peace, security, and prosperity.

The Ethiopian government launched an offensive in the Tigray region in November 2020, sparking a conflict that has displaced over two million people.

Ethiopia, a long-time US ally, declared an indefinite humanitarian truce in March, allowing some aid deliveries and alleviating fears of famine.
