Ethiopia’s parliament has voted to end the state of emergency

Ethiopia-(Berberanews)-Ethiopia’s parliament has agreed to lift a six-month state of emergency that was imposed in November after rebel Tigrayan troops threatened to march on Addis Ababa, the capital.

Following cabinet requests last month to shorten emergency measures in view of improving security situations in the country, MPs made their decision on Tuesday.

Most of the rebel forces have retired to their home province of Tigray, following quick advances in November, and there are hints of a tentative thaw in relations between the warring parties.

There were 63 lawmakers who voted against lifting the state of emergency, while 21 abstained from voting.

The six-month state of emergency allows for the installation of roadblocks, the disruption of transportation services, the imposition of curfews, and the military’s takeover of certain areas, among other things.

Hundreds of people, predominantly ethnic Tigrayans, have been detained since the state of emergency was declared.
