Ethiopian opposition leaders in prison are on hunger strike

Ethiopia-(Berberanews)-Senior leaders of a major opposition party in #Ethiopia who are imprisoned are refusing to eat in protest of “deplorable conditions” within the prison.

Members of the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) executive committee Mikael Boran and Kenasa Ayana, as well as the party’s spokesperson Bate Urgessa, have been on hunger strike for several days, according to the party.

According to the party, some of the leaders are “poorly managed and served,” while others are “deprived of food, drink, and other basic humanitarian needs.”

According to the report, the leaders’ health is failing on a daily basis, and their families are unable to visit them.

The claims have elicited no response from the authorities.

On charges of inciting violence and terrorism, the majority of the OLF’s senior leaders have been imprisoned for more than two years.

Despite court orders to release them, several of them remain imprisoned.

To pave the stage for a projected national dialogue, the government recently released opposition leaders from various political groups.

#OLF claims it was not invited to participate in the dialogue and demands the release of its leaders so they can attend.
