SOMALILAND: Heavy rain floods kill 2 and destroy homes

HARGEISA (SomalilandPress)—News coming from Hargeisa and Gabiley region of Somaliland has confirmed heavy rain with strong winds swapping these two parts of Somaliland this evening. According to eye witnesses at least two people have been confirmed dead after the truck that they were driving in try to cross a flood river and were swept by the flood. This dreadful incident is said to have taken place at Hargeisa’s main dry river bank where the vehicle that the deceased were in is said to attempt to cross into the other side of the city. Hargeisa city has two main bridges and several dry river banks created by years of soil erosion and running water. It has become very common that when it rains in the city to see lives and properties lost when drivers and residents try to cross these river banks each year.
The rains have also damaged homes in the capital, lifting the zinc plate roofs and downing power lines. Residents whom our reporter was able to speak with blame the local government for the lack of proper flood control infrastructure and methods including drainage system for the capital.
