Taiwan is “not Ukraine” said China’s foreign ministry

China-(Berberanews)-China’s foreign ministry said on Wednesday that Taiwan is “not Ukraine” and has always been an inalienable part of China, as Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen called for more vigilance on military exercises in response to the crisis.

China, which claims Taiwan as its own territory, has increased military activities near the self-governing island in recent years, though Taiwan has not reported any extraordinary Chinese maneuvers recently as tensions over Ukraine have risen.

Hua Chunying, a spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, rejected any relationship between the Ukraine and Taiwan situations.

“Taiwan is not Ukraine,” she stated emphatically. “Taiwan has always been inextricably linked to China. This is a legal and historical fact that cannot be disputed.”

The issue of Taiwan is a hangover from the civil war, but Hua said that China’s integrity should never have been jeopardized and never has been jeopardized.

The remarks follow British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s warning last week about the dangers facing Taiwan if Western countries fail to follow through on their promises to back Ukraine’s independence.
