Rusia-(Berberanews)-President Vladimir Putin of Russia has signed a proclamation declaring the two separatist territories in eastern Ukraine to be independent states.
“I deem it necessary to make a decision that should have been made a long time ago – to immediately recognise the independence and sovereignty of the Donetsk People’s Republic and the Lugansk People’s Republic,” Putin said in a televised address.
The West has frequently advised Russia not to recognize the separatist territories of Donetsk and Luhansk, saying that doing so would effectively kill the region’s delicate peace process.
Putin’s declaration clears the way for Russia to publicly commit troops and weaponry to Ukraine’s long-running battle with rebels backed by Moscow.
President Biden plans to put sanctions on Ukraine’s separatist regions.
According to a representative for President Biden, an executive order restricting new American investment, trade, and funding to, from, or in Ukraine’s two breakaway regions will be issued soon.
In a statement, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said, “We have anticipated an action like this from Russia and are ready to respond swiftly.”
